CELEBRATING MATARIKIMĀORI NEW YEAR
Mānawa maiea te putanga o te ariki.Mānawa maiea te ariki o te rangi.
Mānawa maiea te Mātahi o te Tau.
 Whano, whano
 Haramai te toki ata huakirangi
 Haumi e, Hui e , Tāiki e!
Celebrate the rising of MatarikiCelebrate the lord of the skies
 Celebrate the new year
 Unite, unite
 And bring forth the dawn
Together, in union, we are one!
Matariki is a time of remembrance (whakamahara), celebration (whakanuia), and planning for the future (whakatakoto mahere). Traditionally, it involves honoring the dead (whakamānawa i te hunga mate), celebrating the present with feasting (hākari) and social gatherings (hui), and setting intentions (whāinga) for the year ahead. What better way to celebrate than with this year’s theme: Matariki Heri Kai!! – Matariki, the bringer of food!!One way you can celebrate as a whānau is to have your own hākari (feast) at home. incorporating food that represents each of the nine stars in the Matariki cluster:

Matariki: Represents health and wellbeing. Include nutritious dishes like vegetable soups or salads.Pōhutukawa: Honors those who have passed. Prepare a favourite dish of a loved one who has died.Tupuānuku: Associated with food from the soil. Serve root vegetables, greens, and other garden produce.Tupuārangi: Linked to food from the sky. Include dishes featuring birds or eggs.Waitī: Represents fresh water and the food it provides. Include freshwater fish or eels.Waitā: Symbolizes the ocean and its bounty. Serve seafood such as fish, shellfish, or seaweed.Waipuna-ā-Rangi: Connected to rain. Include foods that thrive in rain, like mushrooms or fresh, juicy fruits.Ururangi: Represents the winds. Prepare light, airy dishes such as soufflés or meringues.Hiwa-i-te-Rangi: A star of wishes and aspirations. Create a dish that represents your hopes for the future, perhaps a family recipe with a twist. By incorporating these foods, you can honor each aspect of Matariki and enjoy a meaningful and delicious celebration with your whānau. Keep a look out for Matariki celebrations in the area.
