MATARIKI – A TIME TO REFLECT, CELEBRATE ADN LOOK FORWARD
Matariki marks the Māori New Year and is celebrated with the rising of the Matariki star cluster in the early winter sky. It is a special time to reflect on those who have passed, celebrate the present with whānau and friends, and look ahead with hope and aspirations for the year to come.
This year’s theme, Matariki Herenga Waka – For Everyone, which celebrates belonging, inclusion, and the strength that comes from bringing people together. Inspired by the traditional place where waka are tied together, the theme reminds us that everyone has a place in our community and that we are stronger when we learn, celebrate, and grow alongside one another.
We wish everyone a happy Matariki and hope you enjoy celebrating with whānau and friends in a way that is meaningful to you. Whether you take time to reflect, share a meal, or simply enjoy being together, may this Matariki bring connection, hope, and new beginnings. Be sure to keep an eye out for the many Matariki celebrations and events taking place in our local community.
Mānawa maiea te putanga o te ariki. Mānawa maiea te ariki o te rangi. Mānawa maiea te Mātahi o te Tau.
Celebrate the rising of Matariki. Celebrate the lord of the skies. Celebrate the Māori New Year.

LEGO WINNERS AND ATTENDANCE

Last week, our school-wide regular attendance rate was 58.3%. There has been a noticeable decline as we head toward the end of term. Please remember that every day of learning counts, and our last day of school is this Friday.
This week there was a draw for the house with the highest regular attendance. Well done to both Te Hiringa and Kotahitanga, who achieved an equal regular attendance rate of 64.1%.
Congratulations also to our LEGO prize winners, Ibrahim from Room 19 and Sapphire from Room 18. One name was drawn from the Kotahitanga house and one from Te Hiringa, with both students achieving 100% attendance last week. A special mention also goes to Room 22, who achieved the highest class attendance rate last week with an outstanding 85.2%.

At the end of this week, the class with the highest overall attendance rate across the term will be rewarded with a pizza lunch. We look forward to seeing which class finishes on top.

LOCKDOWN PRACTICE
Yesterday Randwick Park School carried out a lockdown practice. We hold these drills regularly to ensure all tamariki and staff are confident and prepared in the event we ever need to go into lockdown to keep everyone safe.
Our students and staff did an outstanding job, within seconds of the bell ringing everyone had got down and quiet in the center of the room away from the windows.
Tamie from Harrison Tew, who supported us during the practice, was very impressed and commented that the drill went very smoothly. Ka pai everyone!

IT’S A WRAP
It has been a busy end to the term with the school production. After ten weeks of hard work and rehearsals, our three performances of If Addison Ipswitch Ruled the World – A Cautionary Tale were a great success.
A big thank you to Mrs V for writing and directing the production, and for the many hours of preparation, rehearsal time, and commitment she gave to bring the show to life. We are very fortunate to have such a talented staff member in our team. The production would not have been possible without the dedicated support of so many others behind the scenes, including our prompt team, stage crew, chair collectors, dressers, dance leaders, lighting, music and many more. Thank you all for your time, energy, and effort.
Finally, a huge thank you to our tamariki who took on roles with enthusiasm, showed dedication by attending rehearsals, and challenged themselves to take risks on stage. They are incredibly talented, and we are very proud of their hard work and commitment, which helped make our 2026 production such a success.
Some tamariki have already started thinking ahead to the 2028 show, but for now it is time to enjoy a well-earned rest!

TE REO MĀORI
Each week classes will be introduced to te reo Māori words or phrases to learn and use in the classroom. Tamariki and staff will be encouraged to replace everyday English words with te reo Māori and challenge themselves to use it throughout the week. Our aim is to grow confidence in speaking te reo Māori and deepen understanding of the language.
Here is this week’s phrase (sorry your speech button wont work)

MCDRIBBLER BASKETBALL COMPETITION
After an 8-week competition and a semi-final win last week, our Year 5/6 boys’ basketball team earned their place in the final.
On Friday, they played Clendon Park, one of the top basketball schools in South Auckland.
The game was an exciting and hard-fought contest from start to finish, with Clendon Park winning in the end 20–18. While the result didn’t go our way, the team should be extremely proud of their achievement in reaching the final and the way they represented our school throughout the season.
Well done to all the players and a big thank you to our awesome coach Mr Logan for making the season possible. We are now looking forward to the Term 3 competition!

YEAR 5/6 INTER SCHOOL NETBALL TOURNAMENT
Congratulations to our Year 5/6 netball teams on their fantastic results at yesterday’s tournament. Our boys Year 5 and 6 teams both finished second. Our Year 5 girls team finished third equal, and our Year 6 girls team placed fourth.
With 51 teams competing, these are fantastic results. It has been wonderful to see how much all of our teams have improved since their very first training session. Their hard work has paid off, and they should all be incredibly proud of what they have achieved. A big thank you to Nita, Yisrael, Sophie and Adaeze for umpiring and supporting our teams.
