UPDATED SCHOOL POLICY ON CELL PHONES AND OTHER DIGITAL DEVICES

A personal digital device is any privately owned digital device, not part of any school-approved Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) programme.

For the purpose of this policy, a digital device may include cell phones, computers, tablets, storage devices, cameras, handheld PCs and consoles, smartwatches, video/audio devices, e-readers, and other similar devices. It can also include any other electronic tool, device, system or resource that can generate, store, or process data.

Randwick Park School does not allow students to bring personal devices to school except for cell phones if they are required for an individual student travelling to and from school. When a student requires a cell phone, it must be turned off at the school gate and handed to their classroom teacher immediately. The phone will be stored safely in the classroom and then returned to the student at the end of the day and turned on again when they leave the school gates. These devices are not required for learning.

Any changes to our school rules will be communicated to students and our school community.

Parent/Caregiver and student responsibilities

If a parent/caregiver needs to contact their child urgently during the day, they should call the office.

If a student brings a personal digital device to our school, the following guidelines apply:

  • The school does not accept responsibility for lost, damaged, or stolen personal digital devices brought to the school but investigates any issues as appropriate.
  • Students must hand in their device to their teacher at the beginning of the day and can collect the device at the end of the day.
  • Students understand that if they do not turn their phone off at the gate, or if it is found on them then the matter will be referred to a member of the senior leadership team

Personal digital devices may not be taken on EOTC events.

Students are expected to follow our Digital Technology and Online Safety policy when using personal digital devices on school property or the school network.

Inappropriate use

If a student is observed using a personal digital device inappropriately, the student must hand it to a staff member immediately when asked. If possible, students should lock their devices before handing them to staff. Inappropriate use of any digital device/online activity that breaks student user agreements will be handled by a member of the Senior Leadership team and the digital technology team.

Inappropriate use of a personal digital device may include:

  • using the device when not permitted
  • any sort of bullying, including online bullying
  • taking photos or videos of other people without their permission
  • forwarding inappropriate messages or content.

Inappropriate use of a personal digital device is managed through the school Behaviour Management, Responding to Digital Incidents, and Surrender and Retention of Personal Digital Devices policies and procedures, as appropriate.

POHUTUKAWA TEAM BOTANIC GARDEN TRIP
Written by Mosese Vakalahi, Room 10

On a hot sunny, beautiful, day we walked to the Botanical Gardens. Some of the boys asked Lauren’s dad to carry their bags because it was so tiring. Some kids in Room 10 walked, but Dinka, Ms Patel, and Jasreet went in the car. I just saw tall trees along the way that I wished I could sit under. Along the way, all you could hear was complaining and some birds chirping. I felt the wind brushing my face. Miss V was leading us to the Botanical Gardens and we stopped for breaks. My hat was full of sweat, and once I took it off, a WHOLE waterfall tipped out. We finally arrived at the Botanical Gardens.

Everybody had packed so much food, but I just had a little bit. I saw so many flowers, cacti, lots of trees. I heard some birds chirping. I heard some flies around the flowers too. Room 11 was with another instructor, while  Room 10 went into the classroom, learning about pollination, the sticky stigma, and lots more including seeing flowers under a magnifying glass. There was an activity where Emmanuel, Asimah, Akaea, and I dressed up as big flowers. The whole classroom wanted to have all my pollen, which was funny. Emmanuel looked so funny in the flower costume. But Ms Patel said I was the cutest flower for some reason.

Afterward, Caroline took us to make seed bombs, here are the ingredients. 1 spoon of clay, 1 spoon of soil, and 1 spoon of seeds. Mix it all up, and roll them into little balls. I saw lots of peaches, we then tried tomato and basil, and only a few of the kids liked it.

Everybody then went on the field and played tag, Lauren’s dad let us play duck duck goose. We all had lots of fun playing. I saw ducks, and so many birds in the trees. I heard the ducks quacking to each other, and also some bugs on the trees. We were allowed to roam around the park, and Miss Patel let us go on the wooden boat, look on the bridge to see the tadpoles, see some eels swimming in the lake, and we found secret tree bases, and saw the bird lady.

We finally walked back to school, which was way faster than walking to the Botanical Gardens. I felt the wind brushing across my face, it tickled. I heard fewer complaints than last time. Everyone on the trip was hot but it was a great day.

USING OUR PEDESTRIAN CROSSING

Thank you to all our whānau who model appropriate road safety protocols to our young RPS tamariki by using our crossings on Magic Way and Riverton Drive. When dropping off or collecting your child/ren please use the drop off zones or off street parking. Parking on the yellow lines, infront of our school gates, or double parking creates a serious safety issue. Please support us in ensuring our students get to and from school safely.
