ATTENDANCE

Our overall regular attendance last week was 59.7%. We know there are lots of colds and bugs going around at the moment. If your child is away from school, please remember to let us know through the Hero app.
Well done to Kotahitanga, our winning attendance house last week! They are definitely outshining the other houses, but we’re working hard to catch up! Congratulations to Serenity from Room 20 and Perry from Room 32, our lucky LEGO winners from Kotahitanga.
A big well done to Room 22, who are back on top this week with the highest regular attendance across the whole school!

FAREWELL TO MS KAREN MCMURRAY
This Friday 14 August, Randwick Park School will come together for a special assembly to celebrate and farewell Ms Karen McMurray as she begins her retirement.
Ms McMurray has been an integral part of our school’s story since opening our doors in 1997 as our founding principal. Over the past 30 years, she has led Randwick Park School with unwavering dedication, vision, and passion, helping shape our kura into the caring and vibrant learning community it is today.
Through her leadership, Ms McMurray has fostered an environment where tamariki and kaiako are supported to learn, grow, and succeed together. She has truly embodied our school motto, “Growing and Learning Together to Be the Best We Can Be,” inspiring generations of students, staff, and whānau.
Over three decades, thousands of children, teachers, and families have been part of the Randwick Park School community, and Ms McMurray has made a lasting difference in the lives of so many. Her legacy will continue to be seen in the values, culture, and spirit of our kura for many years to come.
While we are saddened to say goodbye, we are incredibly grateful for Ms McMurray’s remarkable contribution to our school. We wish her every happiness as she begins this exciting new chapter of retirement.

SCHOOL LEADERS
At each of our school assemblies, our Student Leaders speak about something that is happening at school. Last week, Adaeze and Sophie spoke about opportunities at RPS:
“At Randwick Park School, there are so many opportunities waiting for you – but they only happen if you take the first step.
If you’ve ever thought, “I’d like to play a sport,” then come to the trials. If you want to perform on stage, join one of our cultural groups and come to the practices. If you enjoy singing, give choir a go. If you love solving problems, try Mathex. We even have a brand-new crochet club! Whatever you’re interested in, there’s probably something here for you.
We know that trying something new can be scary. You might worry that you’re not good enough, that you won’t know anyone, or that you’ll make mistakes. But here’s the truth: everyone starts somewhere. The students you see representing our school, performing on stage, or leading different groups all had to take that first step. They weren’t fearless – they were just brave enough to give it a go.
Sometimes, the biggest risk isn’t trying something new. It’s missing out because you were too afraid to try. You never know what you’re capable of until you put yourself out there. You might discover a talent you never knew you had, make lifelong friends, or create memories you’ll remember long after you’ve left school.
So here’s our challenge to every single person here today.
The next time you hear about a sports trial, a cultural practice, choir, Mathex, crochet club, or any other opportunity, don’t tell yourself, “I’m not good enough.” Don’t wait for someone else to convince you.
Be the person who puts their hand up. Be the person who gives it a go. Be the person who makes the courageous choice.
Because the opportunities are here – but it’s your choice to make the most of them. So stop watching from the sidelines and start getting involved. You will amaze yourself with what you will achieve.”

MATHEX COMPETITION
Yesterday, we had a friendly Mathex Challenge against The Gardens School. We are preparing for an Interschool Auckland competition and a Manurewa schools challenge. Both schools had two Year 5&6 teams and two Year 7&8 teams representing them. Mathex is a fast-paced Maths challenge where students work in teams of four to answer 20 Maths problems in 30 minutes.
The winning teams were:
Year 5/6: The Gardens School
Year 7/8: Randwick Park School (Ames, Henry, Sameer & Lupe)
Well done to all the students for a fun event and for representing RPS so well.

TIKTOK AND ONLINE SAFETY
We encourage whānau to speak with your tamariki about TikTok and what they are watching and sharing online. Remind them that not everything they see online is safe, true or appropriate to copy, and encourage them to think critically before following or recreating something they have seen.
A few simple ways you can help keep your tamariki safe online:
- Know what they are watching – regularly check the apps, videos and content your child is accessing.
- Check privacy settings – make sure accounts are private where appropriate and your child knows who can see their posts.
- Know who they are talking to – encourage your child to only communicate with people they know and trust.
- Talk about sharing – remind them not to share personal information, photos, passwords or their location online.
- Think before you click or copy -encourage them to stop and ask, “Is this safe? Is this true? Is this appropriate?”
- Keep communication open – let your child know they can come to you if something online makes them feel uncomfortable, worried or unsafe.
- Set boundaries -agree on appropriate screen time, apps and times when devices are put away, particularly at night.
Most importantly, keep talking to your tamariki about their online experiences. Regular conversations and gentle monitoring help children develop the skills and confidence to make safe and responsible choices online.
