PINK SHIRT DAY – THURSDAY 14 MAY

Pink Shirt Day is about working together to stop bullying by celebrating diversity and promoting kindness and inclusiveness.
It’s about creating a community where all people feel safe, valued and respected, regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, age, ability, religion or cultural background.
Pink Shirt Day is the day Aotearoa comes together to take a stand against bullying. The Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand (MHFNZ) has run the campaign since 2012, inspiring tangata to Kōrero Mai, Kōrero Atu, Mauri Tū, Mauri Ora – Speak Up, Stand Together, Stop Bullying!

Tamariki are able to wear pink clothing to kura on Thursday 14 May.

CELEBRATING OUR SUPPORT STAFF THIS WEEK!

I started my journey at RPS in 2000 on the same day as my son. From that day, I became a parent helper and in 2003 I officially joined the staff. I have been very lucky to work with an amazingly supportive and caring team throughout my time at RPS.
– Mrs Taylor

TERM 1 ATTENDANCE & LEGO WINNERS

Well done to the Kotahitanga House, who for the third week in a row have achieved the highest house attendance with 73.7%! The challenge has definitely been set for the other houses to knock them off the top spot.

Congratulations to Yohan (Room 5) and Jordyn (Room 3), both from Kotahitanga, who were the lucky winners of our weekly Lego draw. Enjoy your prizes and happy building!

Special mention also goes to Room 22 (again) for having the highest class attendance across the whole school last week with 85.2%. Room 3 was very close behind with 82.6%. An awesome effort from both classes!

Remember, being at school every day helps tamariki make the most of your learning and the aim is fewer than five days off school each term.

LATENESS

Did you know that so far this term, in just over three weeks, we have had 1,093 late arrivals! Arriving at school on time helps tamariki start the day calm, settled, and ready to learn. Important learning takes place first thing in the morning, including instructions for the day, reading, maths, and class discussions. Arriving late can make children feel rushed and may interrupt the learning of others. Regular punctual attendance also helps children build positive routines, friendships, confidence, and good habits for the future. We appreciate the support of whānau in helping tamariki arrive at school on time each day so they can make the most of every learning opportunity.

HOUSE POINTS

Congratulations to Kotahitanga for taking out the Week 3 house points competition. Their flag will be riased this week.

RPS HOUSES

Our house competition is becoming a big part of school life, bringing students together across all year levels and encouraging teamwork, leadership, school spirit, and positive participation. From the youngest learners in Year 1 through to our Year 8 leaders, the competition helps build a strong sense of belonging and pride within our school community. Students earn points in many different ways through participation, demonstrating our school values, sports, caring for our environment, attendance, and showing positive attitudes in and out of the classroom.

Our house names and colours were introduced in 2023, with Mr Lologa carefully selecting names that reflected important values and meanings connected to our school and community. In 2025, the houses took on even more identity with the introduction of new house animals and flag designs. Students from Kahikatea played a major role in this process, participating in last year’s house flag design competition held during Terms 2 and 3. The students wanted animals that best represented the meanings and qualities behind each house name, helping create symbols that our students could proudly connect with.

A special thank you also goes to Ms Stickney, who helped bring the students’ ideas together and piece the final designs into the amazing house flags and visuals we now see around the school. The pride and excitement students show for their houses continues to grow each year, helping make our school a fun, inclusive, and connected place for everyone.

MCDRIBBLER BASKETBALL COMPETITION

Our year 5/6 boys basketball team had their first game of the eight week McDribbler competition on Friday. They played against a club team “Timberwolves” and came away with a 16/21 win! Great start Randwick!

YEAR 5-6 BOYS FOOTBALL

Last week our two year  5-6 boys football teams represented Randwick Park School at an interschool tournament.

Both teams played their best and did us proud. Team Blue had some fantastic wins along with a few narrow losses, improving with every game and showing real growth as the tournament progressed.

Team Red had an outstanding tournament, undefeated in pool play, including an impressive 1–0 win over the eventual tournament champions. They faced a tough semi-final against Finlayson, going down 2–0, but bounced back strongly in the bronze match with a 4–2 victory. This secured them an excellent third place finish out of 24 teams.

We are incredibly proud of all our boys for their effort, attitude, and the way they represented our school.  A special thanks to Logan and Whaea Rebecca for coaching our teams.

YEAR 5-6 NETBALL TOURNAMENT

Last Sunday, our Year 5/6 netball teams competed in a tournament at the Auckland Netball Centre.

All teams gave it their best, showing great effort and improving with each game. Across the day, we had plenty of wins, a draw, and a few narrow losses. It was awesome to see how much the teams grew in confidence and skill as the tournament went on.

A big thank you to our Year 7/8 umpires, Nita, Sophie, and Cedeez for giving up their Sunday morning to support our teams. Your help was hugely appreciated!

YEAR 7 GIRLS FOOTBALL

Congratulations to our Year 7 Girls Football Team!
The team competed in the Counties Zone Football Tournament last week and put in an outstanding effort. The girls secured two wins, one draw, and one loss, finishing an impressive 2nd place overall.
Great job girls!

HEALTH CHECKS FOR TAMARIKI

Children can pick up illnesses and injuries quickly, especially during busy school terms. If your child is feeling unwell or has been injured, keeping them home to rest and seeking medical advice when needed helps them recover faster and protects the wellbeing of other students and staff.

Please consider seeing a doctor if your child has:

  • A fever, persistent cough, vomiting, diarrhoea, or difficulty breathing
  • A rash that is unexplained or spreading
  • An injury causing significant pain, swelling, or difficulty moving
  • Symptoms that are worsening or not improving after a few days

Children should return to school only when they are well enough to participate comfortably in learning and daily activities. Thank you for helping us keep our school community healthy and safe.

For more information please visit Free Health Checks for children under 14

ROOM 10 GARDENING

Last week Whaea Diane and group of Room 10 tamariki did some gardening. They weeded the area, planted some carrot seeds amd watered them. We are looking forward to see what they will harvest in a couple of months.

DOG SAFETY

Milo has become a special member of our school community and comes to school most days with Mrs Gill. He is very friendly and loves spending time with the Room 7 tamariki.

It is important to talk with your tamariki about dog safety in the community, as not all dogs are friendly and they can react in different ways.

Key Safety Rules for Children

  • Ask First: Always ask the dog’s owner if you can pat their dog.
  • “Be a Tree”: If a strange dog approaches, stop, stand still, look at your feet, and be quiet. Do not run or shout, as this can trigger a chase instinct.
  • Let Them Sniff: Allow a dog to sniff your hand first before petting.
  • Pet Responsibly: Pat a dog on its chest or chin, not the top of its head, and avoid hugging them around the neck.
  • Give Space: Never disturb a dog that is sleeping, eating, or chewing a bone.
  • No Rough Play: Do not play tug-of-war or chase with dogs, and never tease or chase them
